Whilst Prague is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe everyone wants to visit, Nuremberg is labeld as small, just cute or even boring. I wanted to get my own idea of the city and started a spontanious weekend trip with my friend Janina – and we realized: Nuremberg has much more going for. But see yourself.
To be honest: Yes, it IS cute. And yes, it might be even small, compared to many other cities. But it has its own very special vibe and the most beautiful architecture-park-combination I’ve ever seen. The main colours are salmon, a beautiful shade of brown and off-white combined with the green of parks, trees and shrubs.
Even the main touristy monument – the castle (which IS, in contrast to Prague, a castle) – is worth a visit to catch a glimpse of the old town from above.
Probably the biggest Brownie point: Our accommodation. For both of us, Janina and me, Couchsurfing was pretty new but we made a unique and wonderful experience as we got on really well with our host and were shown around the city from a local point of view. (Almost) no tourist attractions, but elderflower-picking-places and vegan Döner houses.
And to top it all off we even “had to” watch Tatort in the evening – apparently THE thing every German does on Sunday at 8:15 pm. A special tip we got from locals: The herb garden which is part of the caste. Here you can discover new tastes and smells and try all the different kinds of herbs. Such a vernal experience!
And we wouldn’t be we if we haven’t gone to the huge flea market that took place coincidentally at exactly that weekend. There is just one thing to say: It was the best experience ever. The flair of a flea market in the middle of such a city is just great.
Even though there were a lot of people around we were able to snatch some awesome vintage pieces for a fair price. And the one or other objects or vendors guaranteed to make us chuckle.
We will definitely come again to the next market!
